Biniyam Muluken is a second‑year Master’s student in Environmental Science (Energy and Environment) at Addis Ababa University (Nov 2024 – Jul 2026), with a BEd in Chemistry (Jun 2021 – Jul 2024). He is passionate about education, climate action, renewable energy, sustainability, and youth empowerment, and he seeks to bridge environmental science, policy, and community‑driven development in African contexts.
From October 2024 to March 2025, Biniyam served as a Science Teacher at HOPE Enterprises in Addis Ababa, where he designed structured lesson plans and hands‑on activities that increased student participation and improved classroom‑management processes. His work reflects a strong commitment to inclusive, learner‑centered pedagogy and equitable access to quality science education.
At Addis Ababa University, he held several leadership roles. As Secretary of the Know Your Country Club (Nov 2023 – Jul 2024), he documented meetings, supported planning and budgeting for cultural and outreach programmes, and strengthened internal communication. As Academic Affairs Representative of the student council under the College of Education and Language Studies, he helped students navigate academic rules and support systems while contributing to the organization of student events. He also volunteered as a Youth Advocate on Sustained Dialogue with the Ethiopian Law Schools Association (Mar 2023 – Nov 2023), promoting conflict resolution and democratic engagement among students.
Biniyam’s Master’s thesis evaluates waste‑to‑energy pathways to enhance resource recovery and reduce environmental impacts in urban settings, aligning with his interest in circular economy and sustainable urban development. His BEd training focused on Secondary and Higher Education, including an action‑research project (2023–2024) on improving female students’ classroom participation in Grade 9 at Meskerem (II) Secondary School through gender‑responsive teaching strategies.
He recently completed the ALX Pathway Foundations Program (May 2025 – Dec 2025), a nine‑month intensive program that built his skills in computing, Linux and version control, algebra, statistics, business finance, and venture creation, which he applied to collaborative, real‑world–inspired projects.
Among his key achievements are leading project fundraising for vulnerable youth, organizing mass environment‑cleaning initiatives to improve campus hygiene, serving as a volunteer data collector for condominium‑resident satisfaction surveys, supporting job fair logistics to connect students with employers, and coordinating student participation in the inauguration of a school program. Through these experiences, Biniyam combines academic rigor with practical action, positioning himself as an emerging leader at the intersection of environmental sustainability, education, and youth‑led development. |

I am applying for membership in the African Transitional Justice Hub, the Centre for the Study of Violence and Reconciliation, and the Initiative for Transitional Justice in Africa because my work sits at the intersection of environment, youth, and social justice in post‑conflict and transitional contexts. My background in environmental science, climate‑smart urban development, and youth‑led advocacy gives me a unique perspective on how ecological and socio‑political transitions are linked, especially in African cities rebuilding after conflict or crisis. |
